In the series presented here I am continuing my previous research: seeking the meeting points of ugliness and beauty, garbage and decoration, undesired gaze and ornament. The series Skinning captures the poetic and also the less poetic examination of skin folds on a belly. Messages to the Mirror is made by photographs of surplus postnatal skin on a belly, arranged in “decorative garlands”.
A few remarks: Why, in developed countries, is the issue of losing weight more urgent than seeking solutions for those who are hungry unwillingly? Why do new mothers perceive their used bellies as the most ugly parts of their bodies? Documentary: is it just a view of what’s happening in the street, or can it be also a look at one’s own body?
